There are different conventions used all over the world. A lot of calendars have a focal point through which the rest of the time periods are denoted. The numbering denotion really depends on the most critical year in a particular culture.
One popular calendar is the Gregorian Calendar that bases itself based on the birth of Christ (about ~2000 years ago). Any year before the Christ is called Before Christ (BC) and anything in the lifetime and after is called Anno Domini (AD). Anno Domini means in the year of our Lord. Most of the Christian world uses this calendar. The concept of BC/AD was created by a Scynthian named Dionysius Exiguus to calculate easter table and superimposed this on the Julian Calendar (later corrected by Pope Gregory).
India officially uses the Shalivahana era that starts from the reign of Emperor Kanishka - 78 AD. He is among the top 5 great emperors of India. It is now year 1936 SE in India. Indian national calendar.
Islamic world bases the Hijri year on the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in the year 622 AD (Hijri year). Currently it is 1435 AH (Anno Hijeria).
Hebrew calendar used by the Jewish people uses Anno Mundi. The starting year is 3761 BC (believed to be the start of the world by Bible). This year is AM 5775.
Geologists and many historians are now using Before Present (BP) to denote the past. 1950 is considered the terminating year and the past is counted this way. Thus, 2000 BC is 3950 BP.
