Why and how was the Muslim conquest so successful?

Climate change.

The period around the 6th century AD was a period of brutal climactic change. Extreme weather events of 535–536. Pandemics like the Plague of Justinian ruthlessly shook the world. Major empires everywhere in the world collapsed like dominoes and created the power vacuum that helped the Prophet & his followers quickly consolidate power over West Asia, North Africa and Southern Europe.

Every 1400 years, world goes through a major climatic event called the Bond event and one such period started in the 5th century. It is said that in some parts of the world, summer was barely seen in years. Severe droughts helped human migration everywhere and one of the key migration occurred with the nomadic people out of Central Asia. Migration Period

The massive movement of the Central Asians such as the Huns and Mongols disturbed the delicate balance of power. Thus, the sudden onslought of the barbarians  brought an end to the major empires of that time - Roman Empire (that controlled a lot of Europe), Sasanian Empire (that controlled most of West Asia) and Guptan Empire (that controlled South Asia).

Thus, within a span of 100 years a huge power vacuum was created from Europe to South Asia. The Prophet was born right in the center of this era (570 AD) and was handed over a world of collapsing empires. Most of Islam's spread came during this 100 year window in the 7th century. By the time world came back to normalcy, Islam had consolidated a big chunk of West Asia and North Africa. Since then their expansion has been quite slow.
The biggest coup came with the victory over Sasannians of Persia. Muslim conquest of Persia. Two great civilizations of the Middle east - Iraq and Iran thus came in the lap of the Caliphs in a single stroke. Since Zorastranism was deeply connected with the Sassanian ruling elite, the religion met a quick end in Persia and set the stage of Islamization of Persia. With these resources, the Caliphs could take over the remanants of the Roman empire.

Not just in the middle east, but the major climatic change in the 6th-7th century led to a drastic change in human civilization everywhere. In Korea, the Goguryeoculture came to an end. In central America, Teoticuhan culture of Mexico fell apart and eventually led to the collapse of the Mayans. The Moche culture of Peru collapsed.

Every 1400 years, earth goes through a big climatic shift and each one has significantly changed the course of human history. Bond event From the invention of Agriculture to the rise and fall of Bronze age civilizations to the rise of colonialism, world events are very closely linked with these "bond events".
